Sq3r method of study | Math Lobby

In this digital and informational age, we constantly consume content from books, websites, textbooks or social media. It is crucial to get the gist of the information as quickly as possible as without it, you cannot fully understand what you have just read.

The Sq3r method of study can help with critical thinking and understanding of a page or text you will need to read. It serves as a study skill which is essential to use as part of your studies.

Who is Sq3r method of study created for?

It was created for college students by Dr Driscoll but everyone could use it as well. Many schools have incorporated it into their school curriculum.

What is Sq3r method of study

‘S’ - Survey

For 3-5 minutes, students should take the initial time to briefly scan the text for the following items below to get the big picture/ gist of the reading.

1. Headings of the chapters

2. Subheadings

3. Figures, tables, marginal information and summary paragraphs

This provides a framework of what will be needed to read and understood.

‘Q’ - Question

Convert headings and subheadings into questions. What is this chapter about and what question is this chapter trying to answer?

Both S and Q are active reading. This means that you are actively engaging with the text, looking for answers that you have set out in your questions above.

‘R’ - Read

This is passive reading. Passive reading means that you are just reading word for word in the text without engaging with the study materials.

‘R’ - Recite

Imagine you are explaining what you have just read to someone. His will you go about doing it? How will you phrase it in a sentence that will be easily understood by everyone?

Important! To do this, You should observe the following:

1. Use your own words to phrase the explanation and concepts

2. Try to recall what you have identified as questions in your Q step and try to fit your answers in these.

3. These can be done in an aural formate where you speak out loud in a room or softly to yourself or in a written format.

By doing this, you are aiding information retrieval and long term memory for the material.

‘R’ - Review

Lastly, review the material points in the passage with your own words.

Example of the SQ3R method

You can try this method when you are going to revise for your test.

For example, if you are learning about algrebra you can take the following steps.

1. Survey the heading and subheading of ALgebra. Eg. Additional, subtraction, multiplication and division methods of algrebra.

2. Develop questions like what do I when I multiply algebras? What happens to the subtraction sign when it is multiplied?

3. Reading the methods behind the multiplication in algebra and examples of how these questions are solved.

4. Recite or try to explain this concept to a friend

5. Check to see if you have correctly done the question. If you have not, review the points where you have gone wrong.
